Morality

I've begun to believe that being a moral person is simply a matter of believing that we should try to make the world a better place... and acting accordingly. The idea that the world is inherently just and that people get what they deserve, is in my opinion a cop-out. A refusal to accept responsibility for the power we possess. Much of a person's behavior is shaped by the culture they grow up in and the people around them. That culture is shaped by us, and influence is a two way street. While those we are with affect us, we in turn affect those we are with.

Dave Meslin: The antidote to apathy

http://www.ted.com/talks/dave_meslin_the_antidote_to_apathy.html

People do what they know. To encourage action, we must show people what they can do, and how they can do it. If they do not know these things, they will do nothing.

Persuasion and Teaching are linked.

I have begun to realize there's a connection between persuasion and teaching. Persuasion at its core, is about giving someone a new opinion or belief. To make that opinion or belief robust and resilient, one must also give knowledge and/or skills that back it up. Teaching is about imparting knowledge and/or skills to others. Thus, to truly be a great persuader, one must also be a good teacher.

One thing to be wary of: if persuasion and teaching are linked, then so are education and brainwashing. What a person learns will shape what they believe, and how they think. That in turn shapes how they will behave.
